Rebecca Read Along

A few weeks ago, I impulsively threw out an invitation for a Rebecca read-along, starting October 1st. How perfect is this? Just in time for the spookiest month of the year, and just in time for the RIP Reading Challenge! I have heard so much about this book, and frankly it has been driving me crazy that I hadn't yet read it.

We will break down our reading schedule like this:

Chapters 1 through 16: By October 8th
Chapters 17 through 27: By October 15th
I will read a wee bit ahead of you, just so I can post some thought-provoking questions on the 8th and the 15th. Take your time - these are just guidelines, but I am hoping two weeks should give plenty of time to read the book. And, if you would rather post your own review and not use my questions, that is OK too. No offense will be taken!

Here are the bloggers that expressed interest in reading along:

Michele @ Reader's Respite
Carrie @ Books and Movies
Jackie @ Farm Lane Books
Frances @ Nonsuch Book
Molly @ The Bumbles
Donna @ From Little Acorns
Another Cookie Crumbles
Alice Teh @ Hello My Name is Alice
Heidenkind's Hideaway

And two maybe's:

Jennifer @ The Literate Housewife
Gavin @ Page 247

What an excellent group! We should have some ripping, lively discussions with this crowd. If anyone else wants to join along, just leave me a comment and join the happy family. See you on the 8th!!!

"Last night I went to Manderley again."

Hey, this is one challenge I might actually be able to complete! It will be a reread for me, but it's been a few years. That's a lot of chapters for one week...I'm used to going at a much more...ahem...leisurely pace. Looks like I'll have to stay off the computer. :)

Okay, sign me up!

I want to join too! One of my goodreads book clubs will be reading this for October!

I am going to join in, but I'm afraid that I'm going on holiday from 5th - 12th October, so I may not be able to stick to your schedule. I'll try to read it while I'm away and have the big discussion at the end with you.

I'm hoping this is going to be one of my all time favourite books - do you think it is going to live up to expectations?!

Have fun!

Susan - yay! Hey there is no pressure here, just do what you can. I will add you to the list!

April - that is great! It is the perfect spooky story for this time of year. I will add you too!

Jackie - and why, might I ask, are you vacationing when you have an assignment? Haha. No worries, just hop in wherever you can. You are always a tough sell, and see things I don't, but I did totally, thoroughly love this book. Atmospheric and gothic. What more could you want?

This would be a re read for me too but I love the story. If I may pop in now and then, I would appreciate the opportunity. We are having company at some point this month. Their schedule isn't set yet but that might be the only bug in the works. I'll get my copy out today anyway.

Oh, what the heck! I only know this story from the movie--it's about time I read the book. Will try very hard to adhere to your schedule...sign me up (gulp)!!
And thank you.

Kaye - I would love it if you could join us! I will put your name down, but there is no pressure. I found it to be such a page-turner, I whizzed through it quicker than I had anticipated!

ds - oh I am so glad! No need to gulp, take your time. But like I said to Kaye, it goes quickly!

Oh, you're all going to have such a wonderful time! It makes me want to read it again too. If only it weren't for my menacing tbr pile...

I am not sure if I'm going to be able to read along this time. I will be making the rounds and reading everyone's posts. This is such a wonderful book!

I recently bought Rebecca, but I think I won't be reading it soon, since I have other books waiting for me! I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts, though:)

I am definitely planning to do a re-read with you all, but may be a bit behind. I'm #1 on the hold list, just waiting for the person who has it now to turn it in.

I just recently read this...in one day! :) not difficult to get through at all..I hope you enjoy!

OK - so I must confess that I have cheated and started reading this early because I was between books so I'm at Chpt. 12 already.

As I mentioned on Goodreads to Donna, I can see the movie in my head as I read along. DS - I think you will enjoy the experience since you, like me, are only familiar with the story from the film.

And can I just say that reading an old copy from the '50's with a well worn hardback cover and yellowed, somewhat musty smelling pages just really adds to the experience :0)

Ooo dear, the knitting is going to have to go on hold for a few weeks!

I've read the book so I can honestly say that you are in for a wonderful treat!

I will be reading all your thoughts as you read along. I just finished it earlier this month. I cannot wait how everyone responds to Maurier's twists and surprises!

Love this book. Can't wait to see what you ladies think of it!

Aw, this one's on my shelf and I want to read it but my schedule is packed right now. It looks like a lot of fun though!

Frances said...

Oh thank God! I thought I had to have it all read for tomorrow, and I was just settling in for the night to push ahead. And I am sooo looking forward to this! Have my movie all at the ready too! Thanks for hosting!

I share the same feeling and I'm absolutely thrilled to get started. Thanks for doing this, Sandy!

This is one of my favorite books and it has been awhile since I've read it. I'd love to join and will try not to fall behind...so I guess I should say I will try...work permitting.

Sandy Nawrot said...

Kathleen, I will add you to the list, but please don't feel pressure. I predict you will fly through it anyway. Just a hunch!

Don't worry - I'll take my homework away with me! I'll just miss the discussion in the middle I love atmospheric gothic - I am sure I'll love it!

It is good to see that so many other people are joining in.

It looks like you guys are going to have a blast. Wish I could join but I've already got two (or is it three - gah!) read alongs I'm doing so I'll have to take a pass.

Enjoy Rebecca. It's a fabulous book!

Michele said...

Okay, I found an ebook version, yay. I love my hard-bound copy, but I didn't want to risk taking it on the road while I travel this month. So I'm in and hopefully can keep to the schedule. I've read this one a dozen times, but it's still one of my very favorites (and so is the original movie!). Love it, love it, love it!

Melissa said...

I won't be able to read this one now, but will be following along to see everybodys thoughts!

Sandy, I'd like to do the Rebecca read along too!
I read the book years ago and it's time I read ir again!

Rebecca is my all-time favourite novel so I hope you all enjoy it. It's about time I had a reread so I'll try to join in but will be playing catch-up with the schedule as lots to read during the first half of October.

Sandy Nawrot said...

Paperback Reader - I'll put your name down, and just join in when you can!

JoAnn said...

It's too soon for a reread, but too long ago to contribute to discussion. I'll have to be content reading your posts...

Gavin said...

Sandy - I messed up and committed to read "Kristin Lavransdatter" with the crew from "2666". We are reading it over three months but it is a monster, 1124 pages. With that a finishing other challenges I have to skip "Rebecca." I know you will all have great fun with this.

Hey, I got too engrossed and ended up finishing it tonight (it's about 2 hours after my bedtime!). Drop me a line if I can be of any help with discussion points and the like - really enjoyed the book, and will probably post a quick review tomorrow, as well as participate in the "lively discussions".
